Review: Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley

I absolutely fell in love with Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley! It is one of my new favorites! It is so magical and touching and just overall a great book and I suggest you go out and buy it and read it now because it’s awesome!
The Quick Catch Up: Aza Ray is literally drowning in Earth’s air, causing her to be constantly on the verge of death. One day Aza Ray discovers Magonia, a world hidden in the Earth’s sky. In Magonia, not only can Aza Ray breathe for the first time in her life, but she also discovers that she is actually a long lost Magonian. However, complicating matters, Aza Ray soon discovers that the group of Magonians who have taken her in are planning to wage war against Earth. What shall Aza Ray do???
I cannot say enough about this book! Headley writes beautifully and weaves a fantastical tale for readers. Headley sets the tone for the book with Aza Ray’s sassy, tough, sarcastic narration of the novel, demonstrating that Aza Ray is no damsel-in-distress, despite her illness. Although Aza Ray has a prickly exterior, moments and instances of vulnerability, fear, and humanity sneak through her veneer, beautifully illustrating Aza Ray’s complexity as a character. Aza Ray is likable and easy to relate to; a typical teenager experiencing the extraordinary.
Aza Ray’s best friend Jason is likewise a lovable and dynamic character.   Aza Ray’s ability to bring out the sweet side of Jason is wholly endearing and Headly’s portrayal of their relationship is both insightful and delicate. The cast of secondary characters is unique and colorful, seamlessly highlighting the main characters and adding flare to the world of Magonia.
Speaking of colorful, let’s discuss the world of Magonia. You have air ships, bird people, cities in the sky, flying pirates, magical songs, and so much more! Headley’s world is just so unique, magical (keywords there when it comes to Magonia), and beautiful! I challenge you not to get lost in the world of Magonia. I bet you won’t be able to do it!
The Bottom Line: Magonia is such a gorgeous book and a must read! Buy it, get it, you won’t regret it! Seriously. Like, today.
