Review: Perfect Ruin by Lauren DeStefano

3/5 Cups of Tea

The Quick Catch Up: Floating in the air, there is a utopia that goes by the name of Internment. On this floating floating island live Morgan and her family. Everything is good, perhaps not perfect, but good. But all is thrown into chaos when a mysterious murder occurs. A murder which not only causes the people of Internment to question their peaceful society, but also causes Morgan to question the very foundations of her society.

I thought this book was okay. It’s a really neat concept, a floating utopia, but in the end, while the setting gripped me, the story just didn’t fascinate me enough.

DeStefano does a great job of world building! As I said, the concept of a floating island in the sky is both fascinating and fantastical! DeStefano also does an incredible job of creating lore around this island. The atmosphere is also nicely built, creating an air of mystery and curiosity.

The problem for me was in both the characters and the pacing. Both felt rather static. Morgan, our main character, wasn’t gripping enough and had a rather flat personality. Nothing about her stood out. Likewise, the supporting cast was rather flat as well, fulfilling their obligatory roles, but not going so far as to incite change in our main character or the plot.

Similarly, the pacing felt quite static. The story is slow to begin, which is ironic, as the story begins with a murder. Yet somehow it wasn’t compelling. It picks up a bit toward the end, but still remains quite measured and restrained.

All in all, the story was, as I said, just okay. I do want to pick up the next book, but I’m not over-the-edge excited for it.

The Bottom Line: Good but not great. Borrow it from the library. 3/5 Cups of Tea
