Literary Looks | The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon

Title: The Sun Is Also A Star

Author: Nicola Yoon

Goodreads Summary:

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

Friday Fashion | Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones

Hello, m’dears! Tis I, Lila! I know it’s been a while since I’ve done some good creative posts so I’m bringin’ some back from the past! One of which is a new and improved Fashion Friday! If you haven’t followed me from the beginning, Fashion Friday is a recurring segment which takes place on Fridays in which I create a fashion set based on a book cover. It’s pretty simple! So let’s get to this week’s featured look which is for…DRUMROLL, PLEASE!…Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones!

About Wintersong

24763621The Instant New York Times Bestseller!

Bustle – 2017 YA Must Reads

Dark, romantic, and unforgettable, Wintersong is an enchanting coming-of-age story for fans of Labyrinth and The Beauty and the Beast.

The last night of the year. Now the days of winter begin and the Goblin King rides abroad, searching for his bride…

All her life, Liesl has heard tales of the beautiful, dangerous Goblin King. They’ve enraptured her mind, her spirit, and inspired her musical compositions. Now eighteen and helping to run her family’s inn, Liesl can’t help but feel that her musical dreams and childhood fantasies are slipping away.

But when her own sister is taken by the Goblin King, Liesl has no choice but to journey to the Underground to save her. Drawn to the strange, captivating world she finds—and the mysterious man who rules it—she soon faces an impossible decision. And with time and the old laws working against her, Liesl must discover who she truly is before her fate is sealed.

Rich with music and magic, S. Jae-Jones’s Wintersong will sweep you away into a world you won’t soon forget.

“Wintersong is a maze of beauty and darkness, of music and magic and glittering things, all tied together with exquisite writing. This is a world you will want to stay lost in.” —Marie Lu, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“This was Labyrinth by way of Angela Carter. Deliciously romantic, with a nuanced Goblin King and a strong heroine, this story was rife with fairy tales, music, and enchantment.” —Roshani Chokshi, New York Times bestselling author of The Star-Touched Queen” (Goodreads)

The Costume Chest | Wintersong

Ladies and gentlemen and those who identify as both or neither, folks of all ages, welcome back to The Costume Chest! Long time no see! It’s been quite a while since I’ve made an installment in this segment, but I figured it was time to bring it back! For those of you who are relatively new around here, The Costume Chest is a segment ni which I put together a wardrobe based on a book, kind of like if the book was a film and I was the costume designer! For me, reading is an immersive experience, and doing segments such as The Costume Chest and this segment’s sister segment, The Travel Guide, really helps the book come to life for me (and, hopefully, for you too!). Anyhoo, let’s get started!

This week’s featured book is one which I recently read and absolutely lovedWintersong by S. Jae-Jones! I was able to easily imagine the clothing of Jae-Jones’s world largely due to the author’s spectacular world building, along with the fact that the book is set roughly in 18th century Bavaria. This provided a whole world of inspiration. I wanted to capture the gaudy feel of the era, but also the rich, dark tones of The Goblin King’s underworld.

Friday Fashion | Reliquary by Sarah Fine

28171973Goodreads Summary: Mattie Carver’s engagement party should have marked the start of her own personal fairy tale. But when her fiancé, Ben, is violently abducted the next morning, her desperate quest to find him rips her away from small-town life and reveals a shattering truth: magic is real—and Ben is hooked. It’s not the stuff of storybooks. It’s wildly addictive, capable of producing everything from hellish anguish to sensual ecstasy almost beyond human endurance.

Determined to find out who took Ben and why, Mattie immerses herself in a shadowy underworld and comes face-to-face with the darkly alluring Asa Ward, a rogue magic dealer, infamous hustler…and her missing fiancé’s estranged brother. Asa has the power to sense magic, and he realizes Mattie is a reliquary, someone with the rare ability to carry magic within her own body, undetected. Asa agrees to help find Ben on one condition: Mattie must use her uncommon talent to assist his smuggling operations. Now, from magic-laced Vegas casinos to the netherworld clubs of Bangkok, Mattie is on a rescue mission. With Asa by her side, she’ll face not only the supernatural forces arrayed against her but the all-too-human temptation that she fears she can’t resist.
