Obsession Confession | My Love of Hellcat’s Black Panther

Hey, y’all! It’s Lila! Sorry for the unexpected two week long semi-hiatus. I was so worn out and I really needed a quick break. BUT I’M BACK NOW!!!! And I’ve got lots of stuff in store for y’all! First up is Obsession Confession, my weekly segment in which is dedicated to telling y’all about my recent obsessions! So let’s get it started!

Books

I checked out and raced through Marvel’s Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! volumes one and two and ohmygod, guys, I’m absolutely in love! Fun, funny, and adorable, Hellcat rocks! I loved every bit of it and I highly recommend it!

Music

So I was watching Whitney’s (at WhittyNovels) SnapChat, and I heard a sample of “Collarbones” by Thomston and was immediately like “I need dat!” So, naturally, I listened to the rest of the song–and I loved it! It’s not exactly a jam, more like a slow, tenor version of a Halsey song–but no matter, it’s good!
I’ve also been obsessing over “My Love” by Wale ft. Major Lazer, WizKid, and Dua Lipa. It’s a really fun, sweet song that you can get into and dance to and sing along with! Plus, gotta love Wale reppin’ my home city!

Movies/TV Shows

It was an exciting day the other day because…the Black Panther teaser trailer dropped! Oh, boy, guys! Does this movie look amazing or what?! I’m so ridiculously pumped for this film, it’s not even funny! I have yet to  read the Black Panther comics, but from what I hear, they’re absolutely fabulous, and this movie looks like it won’t disappoint either. I know I’ll definitely be in the audience for this one this fall!

I finally saw Rogue One! And it was great! Not gonna lie, I did tear up during the movie, but still, it was really good! Rogue One tells the story of a ragtag group of resistance fighters in the Star Wars universe. I don’t want to say more than that for fear of spoiling things, but just know that the movie is incredible and will give you all of the feels!

News

So if you’ve been hanging around, you probably know that Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones, which was released earlier this year, is one of my new all-time favorites. Given that fact, I was super excited to see that Bustle released the cover and an excerpt of Shadowsong, the sequel to Wintersong! The cover and excerpt have me even more hyped for the sequel, if that’s even possible. Definitely check it out!

Fadwa’s post got me thinking about my own relationship with my readers and what I believe my resposibilities to y’all are. Definitely check her post out ASAP!

That’s all for today, folks! Tell me all about your latest obsessions in the comments! TTYL!

Obsession Confession | Come Back To Me Star Trek!

Hey y’all! What’s up?! It’s Lila! I know it’s been a while, but I needed to take a week or two of rest because I was just exhausted, physically and mentally. I’m still pretty tired, in all honesty, but I wanted to get back to blogging. Anyhoo. In the time during my break, I found plenty of new things to obsess over! So let’s check ’em out!

Books

I’ve been reading A Court of Wings And Ruin by Sarah J. Maas really, really slowly because I want to savor it, so, sadly, that means that I have no featured book this week. Sorry, y’all! 😭

Music

I’ve really been digging “Back To Me” by Marian Hill and Lauren Juaregui of late. The simple beat and trilling melody had me shimmying my hips and singing a long the whole time. I love how viscous the song is, without it being slow. Y’all should for sure give this song a listen soon!

Movies/TV/Trailers

The trailer for Star Trek: Discovery was released and I’ve never been a Trekkie, but this? This looks so good! I especially love that the leads are women of color (and they’re a friendship pair made up of two different races)! It’s just so refreshing to see, especially for a show which is supposed to be set in the future, where things have (hopefully) progressed a bit! But representation aside, this show looks stellar (pun intended)! I’m all for sci fi action adventures, so I’ll definitely be watching this!

Other Stuff

My bestie taught me how to tie a turban and oh my god, it’ll be a real struggle not to wear one for the rest of my life! I’ve always admired turbans, but could never figure out how to tie one–but my bestie taught me the simple twist and tuck method. I love that turbans are an elegant, yet bohemian, simple way to hide your hair if it’s messy or if you don’t feel like dealing with it! I’ll be taking this style with me to the grave!

News

I couldn’t find any major bookish news this week, so instead of me telling you the news, I want y’all to tell me in the comments what recent bookish news you’r excited about!

Laughter

So this is happenning:

Remember that amazing movie Twitter came up with based on that picture of Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o? The one in which Rihanna was a scammer and Lupita was her smart, scheming sidekick? Well now it’s actually gonna be real! Apparently the story is gonna be a Netflix movie starring Rihanna and Lupita, directed by Ava DuVernay, and written by Issa Rae!!! So there ya have it! Never underestimate the creative power of community on social media!

Obsession Confession | A Court of Geniuses Living Ultralife!

Whew! I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a busy two weeks! Between deadlines and outings and events and classes/lessons, I’ve been running around. Hence, why I missed a week of Obsession Confession (but…let’s just not mention that…). Anyhoo, somehow, between all of the insanity, I managed to discover new obsessions to share with you! So, let’s not delay any longer!

Books

Was there any doubt in your mind that I’d choose A Court of Wings And Ruin by Sarah J. Maas this week? If there was then let me officially put those doubts to rest! I have been waiting for this book since I finished ACOMAF and oh my god I am loving it!!!! I haven’t finished it yet because I want to savor it, but everything about it so far is everything I could’ve ever wanted and more! I adore this series and I’m so happy to finally have ACOWAR in my hands!!!

Music

I’ve been listening to and loving “Ultralife” by Oh Wonder lately. The song is just so happy and catchy and it makes me feel like speeding through the countryside with my friends on a sunny day! I also love the vocals on the track, which manage to be ethereal, yet still have this sense of gravity.

Movies/TV/Trailers

I started watching National Georgaphic’s new biographical Albert Einstein mini-series, Genius, and I am loving it! Fun fact about me: Albert Einstein is my favorite scientist! Not because I’m a physics/biology major and I’m being basic and cliché, but because I relate to Einstein so much that it’s actually scary. So when I heard about Genius, I just knew I had to watch it! And, what’d’ya know?! I adore the series! (Surprise!)

The second season of Sense8 was released this past Thursday and I am super excited for it! I can’t believe that the moment I’ve been waiting for for two years (oh, the agony! the pain!) is finally here! I haven’t had time to watch it yet, but rest assured, that will be rectified ASAP!

It was quite the busy week in TV-land because in addition to releasing the new season of Sense8, Netflix also dropped the official trailer for The Defenders! This show looks amazing and I can’t wait for our four heroes to finally come together!

Other Stuff

It probably sounds silly, but I bought new clothes for the summer and I’m in love with them! They’re so lovely and soft! I know I’m being quite stereotypically “girly” (although, who cares because eff gender norms!), but I adore fashion. As a low income person, I’ve experienced the difference that good, clean, pretty clothes can make, both in how people see you and in how you feel about yourself. Besides that, I’ve always loved expressing my personality via my clothes! And these clothes make me feel really good!

News

Big news came for Patrick Ness fans this week and that is that the first Chaos Walking trilogy film (which stars Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland) begins filming this summer! I’ve never read the Chaos Walking trilogy, but I know that it’s very beloved in the YA literary community and I’m sure many of y’all are excited by this news. I am interested in the movie, though, so hopefully I’ll give the book a try before the film is released.

Osbession Confession | Strange The Dreamer in Paris with Tahereh Mafi

Heya, folks! Lila here! Welcome back to Obsession Confession, your weekly spot to learn about all of my latest bookish and non-bookish obsessions! This week’s segment is pretty tiny, I must admit, but what’s there is good stuff (in my humble opinion). So let’s jump right in!

Books

unnamed (53)

I began Lain Taylor’s latest book, Strange The Dreamer, and, though I’m still at the beginning, I’m already melting with feels! Taylor’s writing is pure perfection. Lazlo Strange is pure perfection. EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK IS PURE PERFECTION AND ASDFGHJKLKJHGFGHJKL!!! JUST READ IT OKAY?!!!

Music

I discovered “Paris” by The Chainsmokers this past week and I am absolutely in love! Thhe song has a slight 80s sparkle pop vibe to it, mixed with kinda 90s grunge and with a pinch of modern pop and that sounds like a really weird combo, I’ll admit it, but when you actually hear the song, it’s actually really good? I love the singers’ voices; they harmonize perfectly, in my opinion! I feel like this song is definitely one that would fit on a playlist for when you’re roadtripping with your besties, ya dig?

Movies/TV/Trailers

Freeform released a trailer for a new mermaid show called Siren and it looks…interesting? I’m not sure how I feel about it. It looks very dark and it also has Alex Roe (who played Evan in The 5th Wave movie) in it so that’s a bonus, but…I’m still not fully on board yet. I don’t know. What do y’all think of the trailer? Yay or nay?

News

Tahereh Mafi announced that there will be three new books in the Shatter Me series and I just…I just…I just…

tumblr_inline_nmlrbbIVrg1tnc6n4_500

If y’all have read and finished the Shatter Me trilogy, then you’ll know that, while we get closure on some storylines, a lot is also left open ended. It sounds like Tahereh is ready to revisit the world and finish what she started and I am so on board with this!!!

Obsession Confession | Easier for Cloak And Dagger YA Romance

Hey, y’all! It’s Lila and ‘m back with another segment of Obsession Confession! It’s super short this week, so I’m not going to sit here and mince words. Let’s jump right in!

Music

I’ve had “Easier” by Mansionair playing on repeat for the past few days. I discovered it because it was in the background of Freeform’s Cloak And Dagger trailer and I looked it up. It’s a little moodier than what I normally listen to, but I kinda like it for that reason.

Movies/TV/Trailers

Freeform’s upcoming adaptation of Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger got a trailer and I’m surprised at how good it looks for a Freeform adaptation. I’m wary of the network after their Shadowhunters adaptation, but this actually looks like it could turn out well. Of course, I have yet to read the source material, but still! I like the dark, gritty direction they seem to be taking the show–less fluffy-fluff, more real life monsters, ya know?

Around The Blogosphere/Vlogosphere

Beth at Reading Every Night wrote a great post on if romance is overshadowing character development in YA books. I definitely hadn’t thought about that topic before and I loved the points Beth made! On the one hand, romance is a must for my enjoyment, but on the other hand, I think Beth has a great point. Definitely check Beth’s post out and see what you think!

Obsession Confession | Cravin’ The Iron Fist At A Korean Spa…

Hello, friends! What’s up? How ya doing? Whatchya been up to of late? I’ve spent my week workin’, as well as discovering plenty of new obsessions! And of course I want to hare those obsession with you! So let’s get to it!

Books

I figured since it’s the beginning of the month, I’d share my TBR. Now, I am really a mood reader, but it’s gotten to the point where I own a crap-ton of books that I have yet to read and need to catch up on, that I need to start prioritizing books. The following are the books I might read this month. I want to stress that I am not going to read all of these books. Rather, these are just some books I can pull from this month.

Blood for Blood by Ryan Graudin–This is my current read and I am loving it, so I’m definitely going to finish it in April.

Strange The Dreamer by Laini Taylor–This was my most anticipated read of…ever…So I’m getting to this ASAP after I finish Blood for Blood.

Spindle Fire by Lexa Hillyer–I’m really looking forward to this book, so I’m definitely reading this too.

Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi–I had an extra Audible credit, so I bought this one, but The Star-Touched Queen wasn’t my favorite, so Crown of Wishes isn’t high on my list of priorities

Blood Rose Rebellion by Rosalyn Eves–This is another one that I used a spare Audible credit on, so it’s also aother one that’s not high up on my priorities.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas–This book is all the rage and it’s a book that, as a young, Black woman, I feel I need to read.

Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff–I was so excited for this one and then I just…forgot about it?

Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas–I am shocked–shocked!–to say this, but I just haven’t been in the mood to read this?

The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid–I have been reading this since November 2016. Let that sink in. November 2016. I think it’s time to end the madness.

Empress of A Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza–I started reading this and was enjoying this, but for some reason I set it down? I want to finish it, though.

Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton–I bought this then saw that it didn’t have great reviews. But now I own it, so I might as well read it…

Starfall by Melissa Landers (Library Borrow)–I’m excited for this book as the previous book, Starflight, was a super fun, light sci fi.

Long Way Home by Katie McGarry (Library Borrow)–I’m super excited for this book, but I’m also sad, cause it’s the end of the Thunder Road trilogy 😥

Amour Amour by Krista and Becca Ritchie (Library Borrow)–This is kinda my “intermittent read.” Ya know, a light, fun read that I read snippets of between heavier fantasy/sci fi reads?

Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover (Library Borrow)–I’ve heard this is the most palatable and enjoyable of Hoover’s books.

Vengeance Road  by Erin Bowan (Library Borrow)–This was a random borrow from the library, but I’ve heard good things so…

Music

Welp. It’s been a few months since Hidden Figures released and, yes, I am still obsessed with the music. I’ve been listening to “Crave” by Pharrell Williams from the soundtrack on repeat. It’s just got that good dancin’ groove!

Movies/TV/Trailers

I started watching Netflix’s adaptation of Marvel’s Iron Fist and, as is to be expected, I love it! It’s full of mystery and intrigue and is super fun! There is the issue of the Asian erasure and appropriation, though. To be fair, I’m not sure if that’s on Netflix’s part of Marvel’s or both because when I looked up the comic, Danny Rand, the main character, is white. That’s not to say that that fact makes it any better, just that I’m not sure how much Netflix’s hands were tied due to contracting when it came to casting. It is nice, though, that Colleen Wing is Asian because I believe that in the comics she’s white. I also appreciate that for a good part of the show Danny is homeless, as those of us who are poor and/or homeless desperately need representation and too have a major show focus on the issue of homelessness might bring some much needed attention. All in all, the show is very enjoyable save for the diversity issue and I can’t wait to see the next episode!

Other Stuff

I visited a Korean spa with my best friend last week and it was sooooo relaxing! I’ve never been to a spa before, so I’m not sure how a Korean spa differs from a “regular”, American spa. What I can tell you is that there were baths and a pool, a gym, a massage area, and different saunas, along with a freezing room, with ice packed walls, that I fondly refer to as “the ice box.” The different saunas had walls made of different minerals, which were meant to do certain things. I realize that’s a vague description, but I’m not so sure how the process worked. They also had a courtyard with a fountain and mats and pillows, to relax and lounge on, and a restaurant. All in all, it was a great experience and very calming and I’m hoping to go again sometime!

News

We got news this week that there’s a standalone Batgirl movie in the works and that Joss Whedon is set to direct. Cue internet argument explosion over Joss Whedon. Okay, so I’m a newer fan of comics and I’ve never watched Buffy and don’t know anything about Whedon and his personal and work-related history, so I don’t feel qualified to comment on whether or not he’s the best pick. What I can say about my feelings are this:

  1. OH MY GOD SO MUCH FANGIRL EXCITEMENT AND SQUEES!!!…But also trepidation! Batgirl was the first real superhero comic I ever read and so it has a very special place in my heart. While I’m excited at the prospect of Batgirl being brought to life, I also really don’t want them to fuck it up.
  2. do agree with the internet on the point that the studio probably should’ve picked a female director, writer, and producer. I mean, come on, Batgirl is one of the ultimate symbols of #GirlPower and you choose a man to tell her story?! Especially when there are so many talented female directors out there who could tell this story so well??? Come on now. Not cool.
  3. Rumors that The 100‘s Lindsey Morgan will be playing Babs? Be still my rapidly beating heart! Lindsey would be perfect! Yes, yes, yessss!!! This is just a rumor at the moment, but if it turns out to be true, I think my heart would explode with joy!

Obsession Confession | Blood for Blood Is Just Water Under The Bridge

Hello, friends! How are ya? It’s that time of week again! Time for Obsession Confession, my weekly segment in which I “confess” all of my latest obsessions! This week there’s plenty to get through, so let’s get going!

Books

26864835 (1)

Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin was one of my last reads of 2015 and ended up coming #1 on my list of to books I read in 2015. So when Blood for Blood, the sequel and finale to the duology, was released, I snapped it up…Aaaaaand didn’t get to it…until this past week. I think I never got to Blood for Blood because I was waiting for the perfect moment. Anyhow, I decided to bite the bullet and get to it a few days back and…wow. I forgot how much I love this series and Graudin’s writing. Everything about Blood for Blood is perfection, pure and simple. If you haven’t yet checked out this duology, definitely give it a try!

Music

I listened to Adele’s latest pop  ballad,”Water Under The Bridge,” and, predictably, I loved it! There are so many things to love about Adele and her music. I love how she’s managed to evolve as an artist while still staying true to the spirit she began with. I also love that no matter how pop-y her music gets, she maintains that deep thread of emotion in her voice. “Water Under The Bridge” is no different in these respects and also happens to be incredibly singable, a ballad you’d belt out in the car on your way to work. I’m sure it’ll be another great hit under Adele’s belt.

Movies/TV/Trailers

Netflix released a new featurette for their upcoming adaptation of 13 Reasons Why. This short video definitely got me even more interested in the show!

Netflix dropped a trailer for their upcoming adaptation of the beloved manga, Deathnote. I’m not a manga/anime fan, but I do know that Deathnote is incredibly popular, so I figured at least one of y’all would be interested plus the show does look interesting. The only thing that kinda concerns me is the potential whitewashing as I think (And I want to stress that I don’t know and that I may be wrong on this count) the characters are Japanese and the series takes place in Japan? If you do know if the show is whitewashed, please let me know in the comments. Other than that, this looks like your standard A++ Netflix show and I can’t wait to check it out! Who knows, maybe watching the show will encourage me to read the manga series!

News

This is slightly old news now but I can’t believe I forgot to mention that the cover for Marie Lu’s new novel, Warcross, which releases in November, was released! I have kind of mixed feelings on the cover. Many people think it’s beautiful, while others think it looks too basic and simple. I’m pretty in between, but regardless of how the cover looks, I’m super excited for the book! What do you think of the cover? Did you enjoy the sneak peak of the book? Are you excited for Warcross?

In other, more “recent” news, the cover and synopsis for Maggie Stiefvater’s newest novel, All The Crooked Saints, which releases later this year, was released. The book sounds both magical and mysterious, as per usual Stiefvater, and I’m interested in seeing how it pans out.
